LONDON LEADS THE WAY WITH THE
LARGEST 3D PAINTING, SMALLEST CAR, TALLEST BASKEBALL PLAYER AND MOST PEOPLE IN A PAIR OF PANTS!
17th November 2011 (London, UK) – Today more than 300,000 people around the world are taking part in record-breaking events for the seventh annual Guinness World Records Day, which commemorates the day in 2004 when Guinness World Records became the world’s best-selling copyright book. This morning in London’s iconic West India Quay new records were achieved for the Largest 3D Painting (1160.45m²); Tallest Basketball Player (7 ft 7.26 in); Most People in a Single Pair of Pants (57 people); and the World’s Smallest Roadworthy Car went head to head with the Fastest Toilet and Fastest Mobility Scooter.
British artist Joe Hill has broken the Chinese held record for the Largest 3D painting which measures 1160.45m². Joe said: “I am absolutely over the moon to have broken not one but two Guinness World Records for the longest and largest anamorphic painting! As a London based artist it is really special to create this artwork in the heart of the city and also to be able to bring the world records for 3D art back home to Britain where 3D art first started.”
Britain’s Paul ‘Tiny’ Sturgess was measured and recognised as the Tallest Basketball Player at the London event. He said: "It feels great to have broken a Guinness World Record and I am honoured to be recognised as the World's Tallest Current Basketball Player. To be acknowledged for my height whilst playing for the World Famous Harlem Globetrotters couldn't be better."
British inventors Edd China (Fastest Toilet, 42.25 mph); Colin Furze (Fastest Mobility Scooter, 71.59 mph); and Perry Watkins (Smallest Roadworthy Car, measuring 41 in high and 26 in wide, 30 mph) raced against one another. Meanwhile, UK Fair-trade organisation, Pants to Poverty, achieved a new record for the Most People in a Single Pair of Pants (50 people).
Guinness World Records Editor-in-Chief, Craig Glenday, said: "Guinness World Records Day is a chance to celebrate not just incredible individual achievements but also civic and national pride - whether it's the Irish bringing together leprechauns, the Brits serving up cream teas or the Americans performing a mass Soul Train dance. This year, it seems to be about bringing records back home to the people who are most passionate about enjoying their culture and national identity.”
All records set on Guinness World Records Day 2011 will be short-listed for inclusion in next edition of the book – the Guinness World Records 2012 edition is currently at the top of the UK’s bestseller list.
